In the interest of preserving the spirit and the tradition of the true cowboy, a group of real, local cowboys initiated this event more than 25 years ago.
Since 1970 a number of professional broncs have made their debut at the Jordan Matched Bronc Ride. Every Father's Day, at the VFW Rodeo Grounds, the best cowboys in the region are invited to challenge the best broncs the area has to offer. The result is an afternoon of pure western pleasure and excitement, watching man and horse, each trying to best the other in the classic cowboy event of saddle bronc riding.
In modern times, this has become more sport than job requirement, however there are still those who do bronc riding as a way of life.
While the style and method varies between sport and breaking the horse to ride; the goal is the same. To match every cowboy with the horse that best fits his style and ability, in order to accomplish the job at hand.
This too gives you a glimpse of the olden-day bronc busting methods. A team of three cowboys is required to saddle a wild horse and ride him the length of the arena, then return to the officials with the saddle in hand.
The team consists of an anchor, a mugger, and a rider. The anchor holds the horse from getting away and the mugger 'ears him down' or distracts him at the head, while the rider saddles and mounts the horse.
This event depicts the true challenge of that first ride on any wild horse. It is a definite crowd pleaser; action packed and unpredictable.
